Hampton was constructed between 1783 and 1790 and is an outstanding example of late Georgian architecture. It is of massive scale designed with a large central portion connected to two wings by hyphens. The stone structure was originally covered with stucco scored to mimic ashlar stone. The roofing material was originally wooden shingles which were replaced by slate in 1841. The large central porticoes and the cupola dome give the Mansion a very distinctive appearance.

The south side of the mansion opens out to the Great Terrace and formal gardens. The urns, placed throughout the landscape
c 1845, add to the carefully planned beauty.
